The Open Enrollment period for 2026 coverage runs from November 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026. However, to ensure your health insurance begins on January 1, 2026, you must complete your application and plan selection by December 31, 2025. Missing this date could result in a coverage gap or the loss of specific state-funded subsidies designed to buffer the 2026 rate increases.
For 2026, many Californians will experience a "Subsidy Cliff" because the federal enhanced tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act have expired. This means individuals earning above 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (approx. $62,600 for an individual) may no longer receive federal premium assistance. However, California has allocated $190 million in state-specific funds to protect those earning under 150% FPL, keeping their premiums comparable to 2025 levels.
To secure your 2026 plan, you must first update your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI), as even a small variance can now trigger a full repayment of tax credits at year-end.
Step 1: Verify your 2026 income projections to avoid the subsidy cliff.
Step 2: Compare the new "Enhanced Silver" tiers, which offer reduced deductibles for lower-income households.
Step 3: Confirm that your preferred doctors and local hospitals remain in-network for the 2026 plan year.
If you miss the December 31 deadline, you can still enroll until January 31, but your coverage will not start until February 1. After January 31, enrollment is generally restricted to those with a Qualifying Life Event (SEP), such as marriage, birth of a child, or loss of employer-sponsored insurance.
