Roth

·         Super Catch-Up:11,250美元

·         401(k)

·         Roth

·         Catch-Up追加

·         Super Catch-Up

Roth Catch-Up?

Roth?

Payroll:

Roth Catch-Up

Super Catch-Up

·         Roth 401(k)

·         Catch-Up

·         Super Catch-Up

·         NQDC

·         PTE Tax

Catch-Up Contributions Explained: Fast-Tracking Your Retirement Savings After Age 50

Accelerating Executive Wealth: Navigating SECURE 2.0 Catch-Up Contribution Arbitrage

For California enterprise founders, C-suite executives, and high-earning corporate leaders over age 50, late-stage retirement accumulation represents an essential wealth acceleration corridor. Historically, catch-up contributions provided a straightforward mechanism: sheltering additional pre-tax dollars to reduce top-bracket federal and California state income tax drag. However, the regulatory landscape undergoes a seismic shift as the delayed mandates of the SECURE 2.0 Act take full statutory effect.

Navigating these new rules requires migrating from passive pre-tax deferral habits to an offensive, dual-track wealth architecture. By mastering the statutory reclassification mandates and enhanced contribution brackets under IRC\414(v), corporate leaders can eliminate compliance drag, protect liquidity, and lock in compounding tax-free growth. Decoding the Mandated Roth Shift and "Super Catch-Up" Brackets Under the SECURE 2.0 framework, catch-up rules split into two distinct operational vectors, imposing mandatory after-tax reclassifications on high earners while opening aggressive new savings windows for pre-retirees: The $145,000 Mandatory Roth Reclassification IRC\414(7): Participants aged 50 and older whose prior-year FICA compensation exceeded $145,000 (indexed for inflation) are statutorily barred from making pre-tax catch-up contributions. All catch-up deferrals above the standard individual baseline must be directed into designated Roth accounts on an after-tax basis. The "Super Catch-Up" Expansion Window: To offset the loss of immediate pre-tax deductions for high earners, SECURE 2.0 establishes an enhanced contribution tier for participants aged 60 through 63. For 401(k) and 403(b) plans, this special bracket expands the standard catch-up allowance by 50%—providing up to $11,250 annually in additional deferral capacity. The Plan Document Roth Feature Mandate: Corporate sponsors must update plan documents to support designated Roth contributions. Under statutory rules, if a plan does not permit Roth catch-up contributions, high earners earning over $145,000 are legally prohibited from making any catch-up contributions whatsoever.

Decoding the Mandated Roth Shift and "Super Catch-Up" Brackets

Under the SECURE 2.0 framework, catch-up rules split into two distinct operational vectors, imposing mandatory after-tax reclassifications on high earners while opening aggressive new savings windows for pre-retirees:

  • The $145,000 Mandatory Roth Reclassification IRC\414(7): Participants aged 50 and older whose prior-year FICA compensation exceeded $145,000 (indexed for inflation) are statutorily barred from making pre-tax catch-up contributions. All catch-up deferrals above the standard individual baseline must be directed into designated Roth accounts on an after-tax basis.
  • The "Super Catch-Up" Expansion Window: To offset the loss of immediate pre-tax deductions for high earners, SECURE 2.0 establishes an enhanced contribution tier for participants aged 60 through 63. For 401(k) and 403(b) plans, this special bracket expands the standard catch-up allowance by 50%—providing up to $11,250 annually in additional deferral capacity.
  • The Plan Document Roth Feature Mandate: Corporate sponsors must update plan documents to support designated Roth contributions. Under statutory rules, if a plan does not permit Roth catch-up contributions, high earners earning over $145,000 are legally prohibited from making any catch-up contributions whatsoever.

Strategic Arbitrage: Turning Immediate Tax Drag into Lifetime Capital Security

While losing immediate pre-tax deductions on catch-up dollars increases current-year taxable income, it creates a powerful long-term structural advantage. For high-earning California executives facing top marginal tax brackets exceeding 50% during peak earning years, forcing catch-up dollars into a Roth account locks in tax-free compounding growth and completely tax-free distributions in retirement.

Consider a 61-year-old California enterprise owner earning $500,000 annually. By fully exploiting the $24,500 standard deferral alongside the $11,250 "Super Catch-Up" capacity, the owner injects $35,750 into their retirement ecosystem in a single year. While the $11,250 catch-up portion is funded with after-tax dollars, those assets compound completely insulated from future federal and California capital gains taxes, net investment income tax (NIIT), and potential future income tax rate hikes.

At Linck Consulting Inc., John Lin, CPA integrates executive catch-up optimization into broader corporate payroll architectures and non-qualified deferred compensation (NQDC) plans. This ensures high-earning executives systematically capture maximum statutory allowances while protecting enterprise cash flow.
